Jill Newhouse Gallery was founded in 1980 and specializes in 19th and 20th century European and American works on paper. Situated in a townhouse across the street from the Metropolitan Museum, JNG maintains an inventory of high quality works by important artists, and has organized regular monographic exhibitions of artists such as Auguste Herbin (2015), Theodore Géricault (2014), George Segal (2014), J.B.C. Corot (2012), Edouard Vuillard (2012), and Auguste Rodin (2010). Since 2010, the gallery has also shown works by contemporary artists including Gerard Mossé (2012 and 2016), Dorothea Rockburne (2013), Wolf Kahn (2009), Kikuo Saito (2012), and Graham Nickson (2009).
The gallery is interested in building long term relationships with both museums and collectors. We work closely with our clients and are available to act as both advisor and agent on a variety of topics such as evaluation and appraisal, condition and authenticity, and buying and selling at auction. We are happy to share our expertise, our extensive art reference library, and all our resources to ensure that clients have unparalleled access to all facets of the domestic and international art market, while at the same time maintaining complete confidentiality and discretion on their behalf.
JNG is always interested in making acquisitions, through outright purchase or on consignment, as well as in the placement of works of art into private and museum collections.
Jill Newhouse is the fourth generation of her family to be an art dealer. She was a founding member and past President of the Private Art Dealers Association (PADA) and since 1999, a member of the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA). She served on the on the Membership Committee from 2015-2018 and is currently on the Board of the Art Dealers Association Foundation. Jill is currently a member of the Visiting Committee of the Dept. of Prints and Drawings, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and of The Morgan.
Gallery director Christa Savino joined the gallery in 2004, after five years of experience as manager of an important paper conservation studio in New York City. Liliya Lifanova joined as Registrar and Assistant Director in 2015.
JNG has sold many important works to major collectors and to important museums worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the Louvre Museum, Paris; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany; and many others.
Jill Newhouse is currently co-authoring the ongoing catalogue raisonné of drawings by J.B.C. Corot, and maintains a database of drawings by Gustave Courbet. Other areas of specialization include French Romanticism, the Barbizon School, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the Nabis School.
